Session IV Advanced Somatic Techniques

March 5, 2016, 9-4PM

Although every time we work with a client it is a new experience, there is way of sequencing somatic work that is most appropriate to the process of therapy. Discussion will include how to organize and sequence your sessions with clients beginning with developing resources for somatic stabilization (such as orientation, grounding, and self-soothing).

We will also explore integrating the body from a Depth Psychology perspective. We will investigate how to gracefully shift from a conversation, to an image, to a body sensation and then support the client in making new connections and narratives from this kind of exploration.

We will play with how the body may house a fresh narrative for meaning making and transformation. We will also look deeply at the ethics of touch and how and when to employ touch within the psychotherapeutic session.

Theory
  • Understand the connection between Depth Psychology and Dance-Movement Therapy
  • Learn the difference between soft techniques (gentle, non-invasive interventions that invite the client to have a particular experience) and hard techniques (boundaries, containment, strengthening the core) and when and how to integrate these within the session.
  • Understand how to work with relationship issues, spiritual themes, memories, dreams and archetypes from a somatically informed perspective.
  • Explore principles of working from the core and the periphery of the body to map and utilize somatic resources.

I am thankful for the time Wendy spent getting to know me and helping me figure out how to find the strength to be myself while juggling the demands of being a new mom, a wife, a daughter, among other roles. Wendy’s perception of how I fell and experience emotions through my body has made me more aware of how I experience life and helped me to step back and be more present/ still during joyful and painful moments. I am stronger and calmer as a result of our work together.
